I was listening to a podcast this morning from Candace Curtis about empowering parents to feel capable in helping their children with challenges they have and not feeling as if professionals are the only people that can help. At the end Candace said “go into this day with the courage of a giant and the joy of a child”
This was such a great line and it has stuck with me this morning. I can’t really find a way to make it relevant to this post as such because I think what is more on my mind right now is the following paragraph, but hopefully you find it a good line too and it gives you a lift!
Sometimes it is really discouraging when professionals you are working with for your child are unable to provide the tools you really need. And as parents we are advocates for our kids, and we know them and their needs best of all. So it is down to us to fight for their needs or maybe we have to change things and take more of these responsibilities on ourselves.
But the brain drain is so real.
I feel like this is where we are right now with Mars becoming closer to school age. Decisions need to be made and none are straight forward. I am finding the support system around schooling for children on the autism spectrum in New Zealand to be quite lacking. We all just want our children to be and to feel safe at school, to be encouraged to thrive and feel happy and confident. But it seems like too many children are falling through the cracks.
I would love to hear your experiences, both positive and negative. Or if you are feeling in this same boat and have questions or comments about your journey.
